Shai Dubey

Shai is a faculty member at Queen’s University. He teaches negotiations, conflict management, corporate governance, ethics, strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship and cross-cultural communications. His teaching extends to corporate training for Queen’s Executive Education in Canada and abroad.

Shai began his career as a commercial pilot. In 1985, he founded and ran both an executive aircraft charter company and a flight training school in Toronto.

After completing his Law Degree from Queen’s University in 1994, Shai articled and practiced law with two major law firms in Toronto. He specialized in corporate commercial law, with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, financial transactions, and aviation.

In 1999, he became the Chief Operating Officer, General Counsel and a member of the Board of Directors of Quicklaw Inc., the leading provider of legal online database services to the legal profession in Canada. He joined Queen’s University in 2006.

Shai served as an officer in the Canadian Forces (Reserve) from 1980 to 2010 and as a legal officer in the JAG branch from 2000 to 2010.

Shai was inducted into the Kingston Business Hall of Fame in the Mentor category in 2013. He was voted the top business lawyer in Kingston in 2009 (Kingston This Week).

Shai served on the United Way of Kingston, Frontenac and Addington’s board of directors between 2004 and 2008 and was the board’s vice chair in 2008.

He was on the board of directors of the Kingston Economic Development Corporation from 2005 to 2011 and again from 2015 to 2017. He was chair of the board from 2005 to 2010 and 2016. He was vice chair of the board in 2015 and past chair in 2017.

He chairs the board of Community Futures Eastern Ontario Corporation. Shai is also the interim chair of Queen’s University’s general research ethics board. He also maintains a consulting practice focused on negotiation/mediation, governance and strategic advice.

    DESCRIPTION OF SESSION

    Entities engaged in research are often viewed as sites of inquiry and discovery, yet much of the success of research activity depends on an often-overlooked skill: negotiation. From securing research funding, forming interdisciplinary collaborations, to managing authorship expectations, navigating relationships with industry partners, and handling ethics approvals, negotiation is embedded in nearly every stage of the research process. Despite this reality, formal training in negotiation is rarely provided to researchers and those who approve and manage research activities. This talk explores how negotiation frameworks can enhance collaboration and impact within the research environment, specifically at the ethics approval phase. Themes such as identifying the underlying interests behind competing positions, managing power asymmetries common in academic/institutional hierarchies, and building bridges that support both individual research goals and institutional priorities will be presented. The talk will also address common sources of conflict in research environments and demonstrate how negotiation tools can transform these challenges into opportunities for collaboration and innovation. By reframing negotiation as a core research competency rather than a confrontational tactic, this talk highlights how one can strengthen partnerships, improve project outcomes, and create more productive academic communities.
